Spring Allergies Keep Pets Itching
The spring season can bring on unpleasant allergy signs for people in Nevada. As we suffer with sneezing and hay fever signs, our pets may struggle with their own allergies. For people, allergy symptoms are a result of the body's response to histamine- leaving us sniffling and sneezing. Pets however have fewer histamine receptors in the nose and more in the skin. This is why the main sign of allergies in pets is itchy skin. Many pets with allergies will obsessively lick their feet, turning the fur a bronze color. Other signs of allergies include skin infections, rashes, and ear infections. The constant chewing and licking can leave our pets in discomfort and family members frustrated.

Treatment of allergies may consist of antihistamines, fatty acids, hypoallergenic diets, medicated shampoos, or steroids. The unfortunate news is that allergies cannot be cured, but hopefully controlled. Another option for some pets is a referral to a veterinary dermatologist for specific allergy testing and treatment. For more information regarding pet allergies, call to speak with a hospital team member at 645-3116.
